The nominations announced this morning for the Gotham Independent Film Awards are a nice surprise. Finally, they're paying attention to real indie movies — wow! — not big-budget pix produced by the major studios' alleged "indie" divisions. Three contenders for best picture got made on small budgets by relatively obscure mavericks: Ballast, Frozen River and The Visitor. The other two are by major players — Charlie Kaufman 's Synecdoche, New York and Darren Aronofsky's The Wrestler — and they're packed with Hollywood stars, but at least they're risky pix not made for commercial reasons.
